It's a solid aluminium base with rubber pads for a smooth grip and it sets the Maschine hardware at a workable angle of 15 degrees. It's spot-on for beefing up samples and virtual instruments, tape mode adding subtle warmth, while tube mode is considerably more raw and gnarly. The keybed of the keyboard is made by Fatar and offers fully wieghted, hammer-action keys. You can easily slice sample out of a clip with precision. Hopefully some of the long-awaited features will appear in version 2. The all new Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S-Series keyboards come in 25-key S25, 49-key S49, and 61-key S61 variants and they are perfectly mapped for the new Komplete 10 software making it much easier for users to control, navigate, and play the instruments and sounds within the new software.
I can highly recommend the stand to anyone. But the included software, Komplete Select, feels like it has potential but a bit weak for my tastes. I like to have the juicy moments ready at my fingertips. A tiny one, but still a bummer. Not just only a pad -Easy to learn and makes workflow more efficient - I personally like the sampler and drum rack feature on the Maschine better than Ableton's. The arpeggiator, note repeat, auto chord stuff, etc. What's more, a Preview Sound function now lets you hear sounds when browsing presets to help with a fast and efficient workflow. At nearly half the price of a normal Maschine, I was skeptical if the Mikro would be a useful studio tool. Fitting a replacement kit is so easy even I could do it. Sounds can also be searched using musical tags and keywords.
The knobs could definitely use some more space between them. The S2 also comes with a full blown version of Traktor 2 to boot. You'll notice I haven't talked much about Maschine's functionality so far. I can already imagine games, piano lessons, etc. The Wow Factor How would you rate the appeal of this product? Maschine makes it easy to chop up a sample and load it into the drum pads. I assume it is because of the holidays, and will try again when I get time. Now Native Instruments has integrated the Maschine Studio with the Komplete Keyboards to make an easy and intuitive workflow for production. I have some minor gripes, but they mostly have to do with memorizing workflows and getting used to making music via tapping these very touch-sensitive pads. Hold down Mute and Solo to put it into Vegas mode for a nice light show.
For your own trademark sound, assign the touch strip to control any effect parameter in seconds. My favorite keyboard in quite awhile. More dedicated buttons have been added, as well as a cleverly designed rotary encoder that doubles as a four-direction joystick. The only difficulty is in settling on a scheme and sticking to it. Included are two new effects and, more importantly, the long-awaited time-stretch and pitch-shift functions. Control one or both decks simultaneously.
There is only one rotary knob on the Mikro. Know what would have really helped? I normally use Deck C for effects and have all 3 decks running together which I full control from my X1s. The Native Instruments Maschine Studio easily allows users to bang out beats on the drum pads while the Native Instruments Komplete Keyboards made it simple to add a melody to the rhythm. It has dropped the dedicated knobs for Volume, Tempo and Swing, and in their place is a single fat, pushable encoder, plus extra buttons as compensation. I was very surprised that Native Instruments included the full version of Massive. Nice improvement again, altough I would not say there was anything wrong with the old displays. I might not have ever made music on a system like this, but my inexperience here is an asset.
