There are so many reasons why They Came Together ought to be a runaway hit; unfortunately, it's a big miss. When Joel land Molly met, they hated each other at first sight: his big Corporate Candy Company threatened to shut down her quirky indie shop.
The movie is from the same folks behind cult fave Wet Hot American Summer, so that might make some teens more interested. It's a simple story of boy meets girl, boy and girl fight, boy and girl separate, and boy and girl get back together. If you've ever seen a romantic comedy, you know what this story is and what will happen. But just because it's easy to make fun of the genre's predictability doesn't mean the movie also has to be predictable. Two sex scenes are both explicit and ludicrous, featuring couples engaged in over-the-top energetic, acrobatic bedroom antics. But then right at the end….
Part of the problem is how the film mimics what it's critiquing. It's a film that knows what it is and plays off of it. It's confounding, considering the cast is practically an assembly of comedy all-stars. If you're looking for a good short laugh, you won't be wasting your money. . And then there's the premise -- make a movie skewering the romcom genre's worst habits by referencing the classics including and , and make it winning and witty at the same time. I went into this film skeptical about it and walked away laughing more than I thought I would.
Unfortunately, he's an executive at a corporate candy conglomerate that's about to put her small sweet store out of business, which makes it hard for them to realize that they're meant to be together in this spoof of the classic romcom formula. There's nudity, though none of the participants' genitals are visible, and there's plenty of vigorous motions and sounds, though the action mostly takes place either in shadow or in the background. But amazingly, they fell in love, until they broke up about two thirds of the way through, and Molly started dating her accountant. Yes, it's supposed to, given the plot device. Thanks to a talented cast, though, this film works for the most part.
Parents need to know that They Came Together is a send-up of the tried-and-true romcom genre, starring and as the destined-to-be-together couple. The humor can be very forced at times, but, for the most part, the jokes work. This isn't a film that's trying to be great, and if you accept that, you'll have a fun time. But They Came Together feels the same way it does when you smile for too long: strained. There's a bunch of cameos and witty humor that will keep you engaged. The story they end up telling not only has every romantic comedy cliché thrown in, but it is told in the style of a romantic comedy, complete with crazy characters who should be smarter to figure out a smoother path to a happy ending for Joel and Molly.
